Official newsletter of the World Architect Masters 2012 | No. 5

Dear WAM Open and ACFx - fans,
While the Alps are being buried in masses of snow and no one in Ischgl seems to know how to get in or out of the valley, we as the organizers of the WAM open hope for more temperate weather conditions and stoically keep preparing everything for the best and most exciting World Architects's Masters we have ever organized. Let the games begin!

After we told you in our previous newsletter how to register for the WAM open 2012 (namely here online oder by fax), we would now like to draw your attention to the following. If you as a participant of the WAM open want to make reservations for accommodation in Ischgl during the world's championship, please be aware of the fact that all bookings should be made by sending an email to incoming@paznaun-ischgl.com. As one of our sponsors, Ischgl has guaranteed us accomodation facilities for all participants registering; should you want to make reservations on your own, you could currently get turned down by hotels or guest houses saying that there are no more rooms availabe. This, however, is not the case, and therefore, we would like to ask you to please be so kind as to make your accomodation bookings through incoming@paznaun-ischgl.com.

But don't be alarmed: our newsletter is not just about dry practical details this week. On the contrary: as far as the ACFx - conference "Minds of Tomorrow" is concerned, we are very happy to introduce Mr. Jakob Lange from BIG Copenhagen to you, who will be one of the speakers at the conference on the 2nd of February! Apart from that, you will get information about one of our media partners, the Australian media platform Indesignlive.com. The Austrian connection continues with Chris Bosse from LAVA Architects (Sydney), who talks about bionics in Architecture in a short video clip and finally, also news about two of our main sponsors, GIRA and HÄfele, is included this week. Enjoy your reading!

Latest confirmed speakers:

A BIG Welcome to You, Mr. Jakob Lange
Since its foundation in 2006 by one of the most prominent young architects of the contemporary architecture scene, Bjarke Ingels, the Danish architecture company BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) counts as one of the most creative and innovative architectural firms of today's world. Mr. Jakob Lange is a partner at BIG and has cooperated closely with Bjarke Ingels since 2003. Up to this point, Lange has been the project manager of several prize-winning projects at BIG: just think of BIG's widely acknowledged Mountain Dwellings (2008), developed together with Julien de Smedt (JDS Architects) or the acclaimed Stavanger Concert Hall (2004) in Norway, that got BIG a Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale. In accordance with BIG's philosophy, in which the concept of evolution plays a decisive role, Lange wants to keep developing productive architectural propositions that could contribute to the emergence of new sustainable ways of living in the future. Sustainability should be fun, thus one of BIG's most persistent mantras; in that respect, you can look forward to an ACFx - presentation, in which Mr. Lange, also from this perspective, will deal with the problematics of "Megacities".

THE SPIRIT OF INDESIGNLIVE.COM

Launched in 2007 as the online arm of the Australian magazine Indesign, Indesignlive is an architecture and design website updated daily, bringing a wide global network of readers the latest design news from Australia and beyond. Indesignlive.com informs you of newly completed architectural projects, presents profiles of influential and/or emerging young architects and designers, and keeps you up-to-date about the latest and most innovative products from various manufacturing companies.

Last but not least, Indesignlive spots interesting architecture and design exhibitions before the rest of the world has and therefore, it shows itself to be an interesting option for all those that want to be informed about everything that's happening on the Australian architecture and design front and beyond. What motivates the team behind Indesignlive.com is, as one of the editors, Ola Bednarczuk states, a fundamental curiosity for what exactly motivates and inspires the architects and designers they portray on their website: "We also love speaking to architects and designers to find out what motivates them and where they get their inspiration, and sharing this with our readers".
